    Viveros de Coyoacán

Situated in western Coyoacán, Viveros de Coyoacán is often described as the “lungs” of this bohemian district—offering a refreshing oasis of tall pines, cypresses, and flower-filled gardens. Beyond its function as a public park, Viveros is also a vital tree nursery responsible for much of the city’s urban reforestation and ecological health. Locals and visitors alike gather here for jogging, birdwatching, relaxing strolls, or to simply escape city bustle among shaded pathways.

    History of Viveros de Coyoacán

Viveros de Coyoacán traces its origins to 1901, when architect and environmentalist Miguel Ángel de Quevedo donated an initial hectare of land—part of the former Panzacola ranch—to fight rampant deforestation around Mexico City. Quevedo’s dream grew with federal support, and by 1914, over 140,000 trees had been planted and the park was producing more than a million seedlings annually. The park, open to the public since the 1930s and officially declared a national park in 1938, has grown to fact nearly 39 hectares today. Its legacy as an ecological, research, and community space continues, earning Quevedo the title “Apostle of the Tree”.
