Victoria Park is the main public park in the centre of Nuwara Eliya, the colonial-era hill station often called “Little England”. Covering about 11 hectares (27 acres), it has lawns, flower beds, tall trees and the Nanu Oya stream running through it.
It is an easy, low-cost break in town and one of Sri Lanka’s best-known spots for highland and migrant birds in the cooler months.

History of Victoria Park, Nuwara Eliya
The land began as a research field linked to the Hakgala Botanical Garden. It was formally named Victoria Park in 1897 to mark Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee.
Today the park is run by the Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council and is especially busy during the April holiday season, when the town fills with Sri Lankan visitors.

- Flower gardens: seasonal beds of temperate flowers, at their best around March–May and again around August–September.
- Nanu Oya stream: the stream winds through the park, forming small ponds.
- Birdlife: a well-known birding site, where winter visitors such as the Kashmir flycatcher, Indian blue robin and pied thrush are sometimes seen alongside highland endemics.
- Children’s area: a playground and a small ride-on train at the far end of the park.

- Stroll the paths: an easy loop takes 30–60 minutes.
- Birdwatching: come early in the morning, especially between November and March.
- Photography: the flower beds are most colourful in the April season.
- Combine with a town walk: the post office, Holy Trinity Church and the Grand Hotel are all nearby.

How to Get There
- Train: Nuwara Eliya’s station is Nanu Oya, on the scenic Kandy–Ella line, about 8 km from town; take a tuk-tuk or bus into the centre.
- Bus: buses run from Kandy (about 3 hours) and Colombo (about 6 hours, often changing in Kandy or via Hatton).
- Car or taxi: Nuwara Eliya is about 75 km from Kandy (around 2.5–3 hours on winding mountain roads) and about 170–200 km from Colombo (around 5–6 hours).
- In town: the park is in central Nuwara Eliya, next to the main road and within walking distance of most hotels.
