    Užupis

Nestled just across the Vilnia River from Vilnius Old Town, Užupis is a neighborhood unlike any other in Lithuania—or the world. Known as the “Republic of Užupis,” this vibrant district has declared itself an independent republic, complete with its own constitution, president, anthem, and even a whimsical army. Once a neglected area, Užupis has transformed into the creative and bohemian heart of Vilnius, attracting artists, dreamers, and curious travelers from around the globe. With its quirky art installations, lively cafes, and a spirit of freedom, Užupis is a must-visit for anyone seeking the soul of Lithuania’s capital.

    History of Užupis

Užupis, meaning “beyond the river” in Lithuanian, is one of Vilnius’s oldest districts, dating back to the 16th century. Historically, it was home to manual workers and a significant Jewish community. The area suffered during the Soviet era, falling into disrepair and gaining a reputation as one of the city’s roughest neighborhoods. After Lithuania regained independence in 1991, artists and creatives moved in, drawn by affordable housing and the proximity to the Vilnius Academy of Arts.

On April 1, 1997, Užupis’s residents—led by a group of artists—proclaimed the district an independent republic in a tongue-in-cheek declaration that’s celebrated every year as Užupis Independence Day. The republic boasts its own constitution, displayed on mirrored plaques in multiple languages along Paupio Street, and a playful government structure, including a president and cabinet of ministers. Today, Užupis is a thriving, internationally recognized center for art, culture, and alternative lifestyles.

    Attractions at Užupis

    • Angel of Užupis: The district’s central symbol is the striking bronze Angel of Užupis statue, which stands in the main square. The angel, said to have been inspired by the Dalai Lama’s visit, represents the neighborhood’s spirit of freedom and creativity.
    • Užupis Constitution Wall: One of Užupis’s most unique features is its constitution, a collection of whimsical and philosophical articles (e.g., “Everyone has the right to be happy,” “A cat is not obliged to love its owner, but must help in time of need”). These are displayed on mirrored plaques in over 20 languages on Paupio Street, inviting visitors to reflect and smile.
    • Užupis Art Incubator: Founded in 2002, the Užupis Art Incubator is an open-air gallery and creative space along the Vilnelė River. Here, you’ll find ever-changing installations, murals, and sculptures—including a piano in the river and the famous Užupis Mermaid, a local legend said to enchant visitors to stay forever.
    • Užupis Bridge & Swing of Destiny: The Užupis Bridge, adorned with love locks, is the main gateway into the district. Underneath, the Swing of Destiny offers a playful spot to relax and enjoy river views.
