    Uplistsikhe

Venture just a few miles east of Gori, Georgia, and you’ll discover Uplistsikhe, an extraordinary ancient cave city carved into the rocky landscape. Meaning “Lord’s Fortress,” Uplistsikhe is one of the oldest urban settlements in Georgia, with a history stretching back to the Early Iron Age. This unique site showcases a fascinating blend of architectural styles and offers a glimpse into the region’s rich cultural and religious past. With its cave dwellings, temples, and theaters, Uplistsikhe is a must-see destination for anyone interested in history, archaeology, and the wonders of the ancient world.

    History of Uplistsikhe

Uplistsikhe’s story spans millennia, from its beginnings in the late 2nd millennium BC to its eventual abandonment in the 14th century. The city rose to prominence as a major political and religious center of the ancient kingdom of Kartli (Iberia). Its strategic location along the Silk Road also made it a vital hub for trade and cultural exchange.

Before Christianity became the state religion in the 4th century AD, Uplistsikhe served as a significant pagan center, with temples dedicated to various deities. After the Christianization of Kartli, the city gradually declined in importance, with Mtskheta and Tbilisi becoming the new centers of power. However, Uplistsikhe experienced a resurgence between the 8th and 10th centuries when it served as a stronghold against the Muslim conquest of Tbilisi. The Mongol invasions of the 14th century marked the end of Uplistsikhe’s prosperity, leading to its eventual abandonment.

Today, Uplistsikhe stands as a testament to the resilience of the Georgian people and the enduring power of history. Archaeological excavations, ongoing since 1957, have unearthed a wealth of artifacts, revealing the secrets of this ancient cave city. Uplistsikhe is listed among the historical monuments protected by UNESCO.
