Uçhisar Castle (Uçhisar Kalesi) is a huge natural rock citadel rising above the village of Uçhisar, about 5 km from Göreme. Honeycombed with rock-cut rooms and passages, it is the highest viewpoint in central Cappadocia and gives a sweeping panorama over Pigeon Valley, the fairy chimneys and, on clear days, the snowy peak of Mount Erciyes.

History of Uçhisar Castle
The rock has been hollowed out over many centuries, and it was used as a refuge and lookout during the Byzantine period, when Cappadocia was a frontier region exposed to raids. Hundreds of chambers, cisterns and tunnels were cut into it, and the villagers lived in and around the rock until the 20th century, when erosion and safety concerns led them to move to houses below.
Many of the chambers have since collapsed or are closed for safety, so today’s visit is mainly about the climb to the summit and the view. The site is run by the local municipality rather than the state museum service.
