Ready to ride a “slice of the ocean” in the heart of the English countryside? The Wave in Bristol is a thrilling inland surfing destination redefining adventure, wellness, and active travel. Nestled on the city’s outskirts, this ground-breaking surf park has made world-class waves accessible all year, and is fast becoming one of Bristol’s standout attractions for families, adrenaline seekers, and people of all ages. From sunrise sessions to inclusive adaptive surfing, cutting-edge technology meets a love for the outdoors, making The Wave Bristol a must-visit for locals and travelers alike.
History of The Wave
The Wave’s story is as exciting as the surf it produces. Inspired by a childhood passion for surfing and a desire to improve physical and mental wellbeing, founder Nick Hounsfield envisioned “bringing the waves inland so everyone can surf—regardless of age, ability, or background”. After nearly a decade of planning, investment, and collaboration, The Wave launched in October 2019 at Easter Compton, Bristol. With its Wavegarden Cove technology, it became the world’s first surf lake of its kind, producing up to 1,000 waves an hour—every day, year-round. Committed to sustainability,
The Wave runs on renewable energy, pairs cutting-edge design with green space, and, as of 2023, is powered by its own on-site solar array. Beyond its wave pool, The Wave is now a flagship for social impact, accessibility, and the evolving culture of UK surfing.

With new waves generated every 8–10 seconds, it boasts capacity for up to 80 surfers per hour, and sections that offer both right and left-breaking waves.
