    St. Helen Church

St. Helen Church, also known as Yabroud St. Constantine and Helen Cathedral, is an iconic Christian site located in Yabroud, a picturesque town in the Qalamoun Mountains. With its roots tracing back to 326 AD, this church is steeped in history, blending elements of Roman, Byzantine, and early Christian architecture. Whether you’re a history enthusiast or a pilgrim, visiting this church offers a unique glimpse into Syria’s ancient heritage.

    History of St. Helen Church

The site of St. Helen Church has been a place of worship for thousands of years. Originally a Canaanite shrine dedicated to the Sun before 64 BC, it was later transformed into a Roman temple honoring Jupiter. The structure underwent significant expansion during 212–235 AD using stones from the nearby Qalamoun Mountains.

According to tradition, St. Helena—the mother of Roman Emperor Constantine—visited Yabroud during her pilgrimage to Jerusalem and ordered the conversion of the temple into a Christian church around 326 AD. This makes St. Helen Church one of the oldest Christian churches in existence.

Over time, the cathedral evolved architecturally while retaining elements of its Roman origins, such as support columns and foundational structures. The present-day building incorporates aspects of Byzantine design with three naves separated by arches and supports. Despite damage during conflicts in recent years, locals have worked tirelessly to restore this historic treasure.
