    St. Anne’s Cathedral

Belfast’s St. Anne’s Cathedral is a masterpiece of Hiberno-Romanesque architecture, renowned for its impressive features, including the illuminated Spire of Hope, intricate mosaics, and a labyrinthine marble floor. Located at the heart of the Cathedral Quarter, it is a focal point for both local community life and international tourism. Whether you are interested in history, architecture, music, or simply a peaceful retreat, St. Anne’s Cathedral offers something for everyone.

    History of St. Anne’s Cathedral

St. Anne’s Cathedral has a storied past that mirrors Belfast’s own evolution. The first architect, Sir Thomas Drew, laid the foundation stone on September 6, 1899, with the Countess of Shaftesbury presiding over the ceremony. The cathedral was built to replace the original St. Anne’s Church, constructed in 1776 by Francis Hiorne, which remained in use until December 31, 1903, while the new cathedral rose around it. The Good Samaritan window in the sanctuary is the sole surviving feature from the old church, relocated to its current position as a poignant reminder of the site’s long history.

Construction proceeded in stages. The nave was completed and consecrated on June 2, 19041. The west front, designed as a memorial to the Ulstermen and women who served and died in the Great War, was added later. Its foundation stone was laid on June 2, 1925, and the facade, redesigned by Sir Charles Archibald Nicholson, was dedicated in June 1927. The central crossing, home to the choir, was built between 1922 and 1924. The baptistry, designed by W.H. Lynn, was dedicated in 1928, and the Chapel of the Holy Spirit, featuring mosaics of St. Patrick, was completed in 1932 to mark the 1500th anniversary of St. Patrick’s arrival in Ireland.

The cathedral’s final form was not realized until 1981, making its construction a project spanning nearly a century. Today, it stands as a testament to Belfast’s resilience, creativity, and community spirit.
