    Shenkeng Old Street

Shenkeng Old Street, located in New Taipei City, Taiwan, is a cultural and culinary gem that offers visitors a unique blend of history, tradition, and flavor. Known as the “Tofu Capital of Taiwan,” this bustling street is a must-visit destination for foodies, history enthusiasts, and those looking to immerse themselves in the rustic charm of old Taiwan.

    History of Shenkeng Old Street

Shenkeng Old Street has a rich historical background dating back to the Qing Dynasty. It was an important stop along the Danlan Old Trail, a route connecting Tamsui and Yilan. The Southern Path of this trail passed through Shenkeng, making it a major business center and shipping point for tea grown in nearby mountains. During the Japanese colonial era in 1915, the street underwent significant changes, including widening for pedestrian traffic, a feature still visible today.

After World War II, Shenkeng’s prominence declined with the advent of modern transportation. However, restoration efforts by local residents and the New Taipei City government in 2008 transformed the area into a thriving historical district. Today, Shenkeng Old Street is celebrated for its preserved architecture and cultural significance.
