The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the largest mosque in the UAE and Abu Dhabi’s best-known landmark. Its white marble courtyards, 82 domes and four 104-metre minarets sit near the bridges that link Abu Dhabi island to the mainland, and the mosque is open to visitors of all faiths outside prayer times.
Entry is free, but every visitor needs to pre-book an online access pass on the official website before arriving.

History of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
The mosque was conceived by Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding President of the UAE, as a place that would bring together different Islamic architectural traditions. Construction started in the mid-1990s and the mosque was inaugurated in December 2007. The design was led by Syrian architect Yusef Abdelki and draws on Mughal, Moorish and Persian styles.
Sheikh Zayed, who died in 2004, is buried in the grounds next to the mosque. Today the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Centre runs the site and its visitor programme, and the mosque can hold more than 40,000 worshippers.

- Main prayer hall: home to one of the world’s largest hand-knotted carpets, at around 5,600 square metres.
- Chandeliers: seven large chandeliers made in Germany, the biggest about 10 metres across.
- Courtyard: a vast marble courtyard with floral inlays, framed by columns inlaid with mother-of-pearl.
- Reflective pools: the pools along the arcades mirror the mosque and are especially photogenic at sunset.
- Light & Peace Museum: an exhibition on the mosque’s design and its message of coexistence.

- Join a cultural tour: the mosque centre runs free guided tours of about 45 minutes in Arabic and English.
- Visit at sunset: the white marble changes colour as the light fades and the lighting comes on.
- Night experiences: the centre has introduced evening and immersive experiences such as Sura and Diya; check the official website for times and prices.
- Photography: allowed in public areas, but be respectful of worshippers and follow staff instructions.
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque – Entry Eligibility and Open Timings
- Entry: free, with a pre-booked online access pass from the official website (szgmc.gov.ae).
- Saturday to Thursday: 9:00 AM to 8:30 PM.
- Friday: 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM and 2:30 PM to 8:30 PM.
- Dress code: modest, loose clothing covering arms and legs; women must also cover their hair. Tight or see-through clothing is not allowed.

How Long to Spend at Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
Allow about 1.5 to 2 hours to walk through the courtyard and prayer hall at a relaxed pace, or a bit longer if you join a cultural tour or visit the museum and stay for sunset.
How to Get There
- By taxi: the easiest option from anywhere in Abu Dhabi. Visitors enter through the Al Salam gate (Gate 6).
- By bus: several city buses stop near the mosque; check routes and times in the Darb app.
- By car: parking is available for visitors at the mosque.
- From Dubai: the drive takes roughly 1.5 hours each way. Many day tours from Dubai include the mosque.

There is no eating inside the mosque itself, but the visitor centre underneath it has cafés and shops. For a full meal, Souk Qaryat Al Beri across the canal and the hotels around Khor Al Maqta have plenty of restaurants a short taxi ride away.
