    Shalimar Gardens

The Shalimar Gardens (Shalamar Bagh) in Lahore are one of the finest surviving Mughal gardens anywhere. Laid out for Emperor Shah Jahan on three descending terraces, they are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, listed in 1981 together with the Lahore Fort.

The gardens lie beside the Grand Trunk Road in Baghbanpura, about 5 km east of the Walled City, and make a calm, green escape from the bustle of central Lahore.

Plan your visit to Shalimar Gardens

    • Entry: ticketed (higher fee for foreigners)
    • Open daily, morning to early evening
    • Time needed: 1–2 hours

    History of Shalimar Gardens

Work began in 1641 and took just under a year and a half. The project was managed by Khalilullah Khan with Mulla Alaul Maulk Tuni, and the noble Ali Mardan Khan oversaw much of the construction, including a canal that brought water to feed the fountains. The design follows the Persian charbagh plan and was inspired by Jahangir’s Shalimar Garden in Kashmir.

During the Sikh period much of the garden’s marble was stripped and taken to Amritsar, although Ranjit Singh ordered repairs in 1806. The Arain Mian family of Baghbanpura were long-time custodians until the gardens were nationalised in 1962. The annual Mela Chiraghan festival was held here until 1958. Together with the Lahore Fort, the gardens were on UNESCO’s List of World Heritage in Danger from 2000 to 2012.

    Attractions at Shalimar Gardens

    • Three terraces: the upper Farah Baksh terrace, once reserved for the royal women, the middle Faiz Baksh or Emperor’s Garden, and the lower terrace, each 4 to 5 m above the next.
    • Fountains and pools: more than 400 fountains feed the water channels and large tanks.
    • Marble cascade and Sawan Bhadon: water once flowed over carved marble chutes and a niche wall built to recreate the sound of monsoon rain.
    • Baradaris and pavilions: open-sided pavilions around the central tank, built to catch the cooling spray.
    • Naqar Khana and gateways: the brick gateways and pavilions on the outer walls.

Things to Do at Shalimar Gardens

    • Walk the terraces: follow the central water channel from the upper terrace down through the garden.
    • Photograph the symmetry: mornings and late afternoons give soft light on the pavilions and pools.
    • Hire a guide: a guide can explain the Mughal hydraulics and the meaning of each terrace.
    • Relax in the shade: the lawns and mature trees are popular with local families, especially on weekends.
    • Combine with the old city: visit in the same day as the Lahore Fort and the Walled City.

Shalimar Gardens – Entry Eligibility and Open Timings

    • Tickets: buy at the gate; Pakistani visitors pay a small fee and foreign visitors a higher one. Check current prices locally.
    • Hours: open daily from morning until early evening; check locally for current times.
    • Tip: the fountains do not always run, so expect some dry channels outside special occasions.

How Long to Spend at Shalimar Gardens

Allow 1 to 2 hours to walk all three terraces at a relaxed pace.

    How to Get There

    • By air: Allama Iqbal International Airport (LHE) is roughly 10 km from the gardens; a taxi or ride-hailing car usually takes 20 to 40 minutes.
    • By Orange Line Metro Train: the Shalamar Garden station on the Grand Trunk Road is a short walk from the entrance.
    • By ride-hailing or rickshaw: from the Walled City or Gulberg, Careem or inDrive is the easiest option.

    Eateries Nearby Shalimar Gardens

    • Grand Trunk Road and Baghbanpura: simple local restaurants and tea stalls near the gardens.
    • Fort Road Food Street: for a sit-down dinner with views of the Badshahi Mosque, head back to the old city.

    Other Attractions Nearby Shalimar Gardens

    • Lahore Fort: the other half of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
    • Badshahi Mosque: Aurangzeb’s great mosque opposite the fort.
    • Walled City of Lahore: bazaars, havelis and the Wazir Khan Mosque.
    • Minar-e-Pakistan: the national monument in Greater Iqbal Park.

    Before your trip

    • Find hotels in Lahore: Gulberg and the Walled City are good bases with easy rides to the gardens.
    • Get a Pakistan eSIM before you land (foreign phones may need PTA registration for long stays).

The Shalimar Gardens are Shah Jahan’s terraced paradise garden, built from 1641 and listed by UNESCO in 1981. With their fountains, marble cascades and pavilions, they are the best place in Lahore to see Mughal garden design.

Visit in the cooler morning or late afternoon, then head back into the city for the Lahore Fort and the Walled City of Lahore.
