    Santuario de San Pedro Claver

In the heart of Cartagena’s historic walled city stands one of Colombia’s most revered landmarks — the Santuario de San Pedro Claver, a magnificent complex encompassing a church, monastery, and museum dedicated to compassion, social justice, and faith. Built in the 17th century by Jesuit missionaries, this sanctuary honors Saint Peter Claver, a Spanish Jesuit who devoted his life to aiding enslaved Africans arriving through Cartagena’s port during the height of the colonial slave trade. Today, the site is not just a masterpiece of colonial architecture but also a poignant reminder of human dignity and moral courage.

History of Santuario de San Pedro Claver

The story of the Santuario de San Pedro Claver is deeply interwoven with Cartagena’s colonial identity. Originally constructed between 1580 and 1654, the sanctuary’s church and convent began as the Church of San Juan de Dios, later renamed San Ignacio de Loyola when administered by the Jesuits. Eventually, it was dedicated to Pedro Claver, one of the community’s most beloved missionaries.

The church gained its spiritual prominence through Claver’s remarkable work. After arriving in Cartagena in 1610, he witnessed the suffering of enslaved Africans brought through the port—then one of the largest slave trade hubs in Latin America, receiving tens of thousands annually from West Africa. Claver dedicated his entire life to serving them, baptizing over 300,000 enslaved people and advocating for their humane treatment. His tireless humanitarianism earned him titles such as “Apostle of the Blacks” and “Slave of the Slaves.”

After his death in 1654, Claver’s body was interred beneath the church’s altar. When his remains remained intact after exhumation, they became the site’s most sacred relic. He was canonized by Pope Leo XIII in 1888, who called him a “model of Christian charity”. The sanctuary has since stood as a beacon of compassion and advocacy for human rights, drawing pilgrims from around the world.
