History of Rock Quarry Garden
The site of Rock Quarry Garden was once a pre-Civil War granite quarry, providing stone for Greenville’s early development. By the late 1920s, the quarry was abandoned and left with challenging terrain that drastically altered the landscape overlooking Town Spring, the city’s original drinking water source.
In 1929, the newly formed Greenville Garden Club saw an opportunity to transform the space. They cleared debris and excess rock choking the spring and began creating a landscaped garden. They introduced a “babbling brook,” designed waterfalls, built a stone bridge, and crafted terraced pathways to highlight the quarry’s dramatic geology. Thousands of plants, including local evergreens, shrubs, and flowers, were donated by city residents to enhance the garden.
This pioneering project won second place nationally in a 1931 Better Homes and Gardens city beautification contest, marking the garden as a treasured local landmark. The Garden Club remains actively involved in the garden’s maintenance alongside the City of Greenville Parks and Grounds Department. Today, Rock Quarry Garden celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2022, continuing to enchant visitors with timeless charm and meticulous care.
