    Republic Square

Republic Square, also known as New Square, is Almaty’s largest and most iconic public space. With its rich history, stunning architecture, and lively atmosphere, it has become a must-visit destination for travelers and locals alike. The square’s significance extends beyond its physical beauty, as it symbolizes Kazakhstan’s journey to independence and its cultural heritage.

    History of Republic Square

The history of Republic Square dates back to the 1960s and 1970s, when Almaty experienced rapid population growth. The existing Lenin Square (now Astana Square) could no longer accommodate the large crowds attending events, prompting the construction of a new square. Initially named after Leonid Brezhnev, it was later renamed Republic Square following the collapse of the Soviet Union. The square officially opened in 1980 and has since become a central venue for national festivities, parades, and cultural events.
