    Rainbow Village

Rainbow Village is not just a feast for the eyes; it’s a story of resilience and creativity. Once a military dependents’ settlement destined for demolition, it was transformed into a vibrant art space by Huang Yung-Fu, affectionately known as “Grandpa Rainbow.” His whimsical murals of animals, people, and abstract designs have turned this small village into one of Taiwan’s most beloved tourist destinations.

    History of Rainbow Village

The origins of Rainbow Village trace back to the late 1940s when it served as housing for soldiers and their families after the Chinese Civil War. Over time, many such settlements fell into disrepair and were earmarked for redevelopment. However, one resident, Huang Yung-Fu, refused to leave.

In 2008, at the age of 86, Grandpa Rainbow began painting his surroundings to save his home from demolition. His colorful artwork quickly gained attention, eventually attracting university students and locals who campaigned to preserve the village. The government later designated it as a cultural site, ensuring its survival. Huang continued painting until his passing in January 2024 at the age of 100.

Today, Rainbow Village stands as a testament to one man’s determination and artistic vision.
