    Pyongyang Metro

The Pyongyang Metro (평양 지하철도), located in North Korea’s capital, is a rapid transit system that combines functionality with ideological symbolism. Opened in 1973, it consists of two lines—the Chollima Line and the Hyoksin Line—with 16 stations in total. Known for its stunning architecture, revolutionary-themed murals, and deep underground design, the metro is an essential experience for anyone visiting Pyongyang.

    History of Pyongyang Metro

The Pyongyang Metro was constructed between 1965 and 1973 under the leadership of Kim Il-sung. It was designed to showcase North Korea’s self-reliance while serving as a practical mode of transportation for the city’s residents. The metro’s depth—over 110 meters (360 feet) underground—was intended to protect citizens during wartime, with blast doors installed at station entrances.

Initially modeled after the Moscow Metro, the Pyongyang Metro features opulent designs with mosaics, sculptures, and chandeliers celebrating revolutionary triumphs. The trains were originally imported from China and later replaced with refurbished German rolling stock from Berlin’s U-Bahn system. In recent years, some stations have been modernized with LCD screens and brighter lighting.

The Pyongyang Metro is one of the deepest subway systems in the world, reaching depths of over 110 meters. Built in the 1970s, it serves as both a transportation network and a showcase of North Korea’s socialist ideology. The Pyongyang Metro consists of two main lines, the Chollima Line and the Hyoksin Line, covering key areas of the capital.

What makes the Pyongyang Metro unique is its grand stations, adorned with elaborate chandeliers, mosaics, and murals depicting revolutionary themes. Each station is named after ideological concepts, such as “Glory” and “Victory,” reinforcing national pride. The metro also doubles as a bomb shelter, with heavy steel blast doors visible at station entrances.

For visitors, a ride on the Pyongyang Metro offers a rare glimpse into daily life in North Korea. Locals use the trains for commuting, while tourists experience the system as part of guided tours. With its deep tunnels, artistic stations, and historical significance, the Pyongyang Metro remains a fascinating aspect of Pyongyang’s infrastructure.
