    Piazza Matteotti

Piazza Matteotti is one of Genoa’s most iconic squares, seamlessly blending ancient history, striking architecture, and vibrant city life. Situated at the edge of Genoa’s historic center, this bustling piazza is a must-visit for travelers looking to immerse themselves in the city’s rich heritage and lively atmosphere. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, architecture lover, or a curious explorer, Piazza Matteotti offers a gateway to some of Genoa’s most significant landmarks and cultural experiences.

    History of Piazza Matteotti

Piazza Matteotti’s story stretches back over two millennia. Archaeological excavations in the 1970s revealed that the area was inhabited during Roman times, with the discovery of a Roman domus (house) dating to the 1st century BC. This villa underwent several modifications through the centuries and was likely in use until the 7th century AD. An inscription dedicated to Fortuna Redux, the Roman goddess of safe returns, was also found here, suggesting the presence of religious or public buildings in the vicinity during antiquity.

The modern square was first established in 1527, when the land between the southern face of the Doge’s Palace and the Carrubeus Ferrariorum (a neighborhood of artisan workshops) was leveled to create a new public space. Originally called “Piazza Nuova di Ferreria,” it became a commercial hub, lined with arcades and bustling with stalls and shops. Over time, the square’s layout evolved, especially in the 1840s when the enclosing “curtain” of buildings was demolished, giving Piazza Matteotti its current T-shaped design.

The square’s name has changed several times, reflecting Italy’s shifting political landscape. After being called Piazza Umberto I and Piazza Ettore Muti, it was finally dedicated to Giacomo Matteotti, the socialist statesman, in 1945.
