The Petronas Twin Towers rise 452 metres above the heart of Kuala Lumpur and are the city’s best-known landmark. From 1998 to 2004 they were the tallest buildings in the world, and they are still the tallest twin towers anywhere.

History of Petronas Twin Towers
The towers were designed by Argentine-American architect César Pelli for Malaysia’s national oil company, Petronas. Construction began in 1993, the structure was completed in 1996, and the towers were officially opened on 31 August 1999.
Each tower has 88 floors and stands 451.9 metres tall. The floor plan is based on an eight-pointed star, a motif from Islamic geometric design, which gives the facades their distinctive faceted look. A double-decker skybridge links the towers at levels 41 and 42, about 170 metres above the ground.
The towers held the title of world’s tallest building until Taipei 101 overtook them in 2004.
Attractions at Petronas Twin Towers
- Skybridge: The 58-metre bridge on levels 41–42 links the two towers about 170 metres above the street. It is the first stop on the visitor tour.
- Observation deck: On level 86, around 370 metres up, with wide views over the city and towards KL Tower.
- KLCC Park: A 17-acre landscaped park at the foot of the towers, with walking and jogging paths, a children’s playground and a wading pool.
- Lake Symphony: The musical fountain on the lake in front of Suria KLCC runs several shows each evening and is free to watch.
- Suria KLCC: The shopping mall at the base of the towers, with around 300 shops, restaurants, Galeri Petronas (art gallery) and the Petrosains science centre.
Things to Do at Petronas Twin Towers
- Go up the towers: Book a timed visit to the Skybridge and observation deck. Slots sell out at busy times, so book ahead.
- Photograph the towers at night: The towers are lit up after dark. KLCC Park and the Lake Symphony area are good spots for wide shots.
- Walk in KLCC Park: A pleasant break from the city, especially in the late afternoon.
- Visit Aquaria KLCC: The aquarium is reached by an air-conditioned walkway from the KLCC area.
- Eat and shop at Suria KLCC: Plenty of options from food court meals to sit-down restaurants.
Petronas Twin Towers – Entry Eligibility and Open Timings
- Opening hours: Usually Tuesday to Sunday, 9am to 9pm, with last admission around 8:30pm. The tower visit is normally closed on Mondays, but schedules vary around public holidays, so check the official website before you go.
- Tickets: Visits are by timed slot and include the Skybridge and the level 86 observation deck. Foreign visitors pay considerably more than Malaysian citizens. Prices change, so check the official website for the current rate.
- Tips: Arrive at least 15 minutes before your slot with your ID or passport. Bags go through a security check.
KLCC Park and the Suria KLCC mall are free to enter.

How Long to Spend at Petronas Twin Towers
The tower visit itself takes about 1 hour. Allow 2 to 3 hours if you also want to explore KLCC Park, watch the Lake Symphony fountain and browse Suria KLCC.
How to Get There
- LRT: Take the Kelana Jaya Line to KLCC station, which connects directly to Suria KLCC.
- MRT: Persiaran KLCC station on the Putrajaya Line is a short walk away.
- Free bus: The free GOKL city bus has a stop at KLCC.
- Walking: A covered, air-conditioned walkway links KLCC with Bukit Bintang in about 15–20 minutes.
- Taxi or Grab: Ask for Suria KLCC. Grab is widely used in Kuala Lumpur.
- By car: Suria KLCC has paid parking.
