    Perito Moreno Glacier

The Perito Moreno Glacier spans approximately 250 square kilometers and juts some 60 meters above the surface of Lago Argentino, Argentina’s largest freshwater lake. Part of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, the glacier is renowned not just for its size but for its dynamic nature—continuously advancing, retreating, and occasionally causing spectacular ice collapses known as calving. Unlike many glaciers worldwide losing ground, Perito Moreno is considered stable and even advancing in places.

Visitors are drawn to its panoramic viewing platforms and well-developed boardwalk system, which provide safe yet close proximity views of the immense icy façade right over water.

    History of Perito Moreno Glacier

The glacier was first sighted in 1879 by Captain Juan Tomás Rogers of the Chilean Navy. Later, in honor of Francisco Pascasio Moreno, a prominent Argentine explorer and naturalist who played a significant role in national territorial disputes and scientific research, the glacier was named “Perito Moreno.” The term “Perito” meaning “expert” in Spanish denotes Moreno’s expertise.

The glacier’s presence has been integral to the identity and conservation efforts in Los Glaciares National Park, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1981.
