    Ostrog Monastery

Ostrog Monastery is one of Montenegro’s most iconic landmarks, a breathtaking Orthodox Christian sanctuary carved dramatically into a sheer vertical cliff face high above the Zeta Valley. Revered as a place of miracles and spiritual healing, Ostrog draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims and travelers each year, regardless of faith, who come to marvel at its architectural wonder, soak in the serene atmosphere, and experience the powerful sense of history and devotion that permeates the site. Whether you’re a history buff, a spiritual seeker, or an adventurous traveler, Ostrog Monastery is a must-visit destination in Montenegro.

    History of Ostrog Monastery

Founded in the 17th century by St. Basil of Ostrog, the monastery quickly became a spiritual center for the region. St. Basil, whose relics are enshrined here, is credited with many miracles and is venerated throughout the Orthodox Christian world. The Upper Monastery, the most famous section, was built directly into the cliff, providing both sanctuary and defense during turbulent times.

Ostrog has witnessed numerous historic events. In the mid-19th century, Montenegrin Duke Mirko Petrović and his warriors famously defended the monastery against the Ottoman Turks, enduring a nine-day siege before evacuating the treasures of St. Basil under the cover of darkness. Later, in 1877, the “nine bloody days” battle saw Montenegrin forces defeat a much larger Ottoman army in the valley below the monastery. The Lower Monastery also played a role in Montenegro’s modern history, serving as a meeting place for patriots during World War II.
