History of Orchard Road
The road takes its name from the fruit orchards, nutmeg and pepper plantations that lined it in the mid-19th century. Wealthy families later built homes and terrace houses in the area, some of which survive on Emerald Hill.
Retail arrived after World War II: C.K. Tang opened his department store here in 1958, and malls such as Plaza Singapura (1974) followed. Big redevelopments in later decades brought Ngee Ann City (Takashimaya) and ION Orchard (2009), and today the street is also a venue for events such as the annual Christmas light-up.

- MRT: Orchard station (North-South and Thomson-East Coast lines), Somerset (North-South line) and Dhoby Ghaut (North-South, North East and Circle lines) are all on the street. Orchard Boulevard (Thomson-East Coast line) serves the Tanglin end.
- Bus: Many bus services run along Orchard Road; use Google Maps or a local transit app for the best route.
