Nilaveli Beach is a long, quiet stretch of pale sand about 16 km north of Trincomalee on Sri Lanka’s east coast. It is less developed than the south-coast resorts, and its big draw is Pigeon Island National Park, a reef-ringed marine park just 1 km offshore.
The east coast has its beach season from about May to September, when the sea is usually calm and clear; from roughly November to February the northeast monsoon brings rain and rougher water.

History of Nilaveli Beach
Nilaveli is a historic Tamil coastal village; its name is usually explained as “moonlit land”, from the Tamil words for moonlight and open land. Inscriptions from the 10th century record land here being granted to support the Koneswaram temple in Trincomalee.
Tourism grew here in the 1970s and 1980s but collapsed during the civil war and after the 2004 tsunami, which hit this coast hard. Visitors began returning after 2010, and Nilaveli is now a relaxed resort area with a mix of hotels and guesthouses.

- The beach: several kilometres of wide, uncrowded sand lined with palms.
- Calm, clear water: in the May–September season the sea is often flat enough for easy swimming.
- Pigeon Island National Park: coral reef, reef fish, turtles and blacktip reef sharks a short boat ride away.
- Sunrises: the beach faces east, so mornings are the time for photos.
Things to Do at Nilaveli Beach
- Snorkel at Pigeon Island: boats leave from the beach near the park ticket office; go early before the crowds.
- Whale and dolphin watching: boat trips from the Trincomalee area look for dolphins and blue whales, with the best chances roughly from March to August. Choose operators who keep their distance and don’t chase the animals.
- Diving: dive centres in Nilaveli and Uppuveli run trips to nearby reefs and rocks.
- Swim and relax: there are few facilities on long stretches of the beach, so bring shade and water. Check sea conditions and avoid swimming in rough water.

How Long to Spend at Nilaveli Beach
Nilaveli is best as a 2–3 night beach stop, with a morning at Pigeon Island and a day trip into Trincomalee. As a day trip from Trincomalee, allow half a day.
How to Get There
- From Trincomalee: about 16 km north along the coast road; a tuk-tuk takes around 30 minutes, and local buses run from Trincomalee bus stand.
- From Colombo: Trincomalee is roughly 6–7 hours by road, or take the overnight train from Colombo Fort, then continue to Nilaveli by tuk-tuk.
- From Kandy or Sigiriya: buses and private cars run to Trincomalee via Habarana.
