Minneriya National Park, between Habarana and Polonnaruwa in Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle, is famous for “The Gathering”, when large herds of wild Asian elephants come to graze on the drying shores of the ancient Minneriya reservoir. In a good year you can see well over 100 elephants in one afternoon.
Visits are by jeep safari with a park ticket. The Gathering builds through the dry season and usually peaks around July to October; outside that time elephants often move to nearby Kaudulla or Hurulu Eco Park, and safari drivers go where the herds are.

History of Minneriya National Park
The park is centred on the Minneriya tank, a huge reservoir built by King Mahasena in the 3rd century AD that still irrigates the surrounding farmland. The area was protected as a wildlife sanctuary in 1938 and declared a national park on 12 August 1997; it covers about 8,890 hectares.
As the water level drops in the dry season, fresh grass grows on the exposed lake bed, drawing elephants from the surrounding forests. Counts of 150–200 elephants are typical, and several hundred have been recorded at the peak.
Attractions at Minneriya National Park
- The Gathering: herds of elephants with calves feeding and bathing around the reservoir, usually in the afternoon.
- Minneriya tank: the 1,700-year-old reservoir, a major habitat for large water birds such as painted storks and spot-billed pelicans.
- Other wildlife: spotted and sambar deer, toque macaques and purple-faced langurs, mugger crocodiles; leopards and sloth bears live here but are rarely seen.
- Birdlife: about 160 bird species have been recorded, with migrants in the northern winter.
Things to Do at Minneriya National Park
- Afternoon jeep safari: the classic visit, as elephants come out onto the grassland later in the day.
- Birdwatching: the tank edges are rich in water birds; bring binoculars.
- Combine with Kaudulla: ask your driver which park has the most elephants that week.
Watch responsibly: choose a driver who keeps a respectful distance, turns the engine off near the herd, never blocks elephants’ paths and doesn’t crowd around with other jeeps. Never feed wild elephants.

How Long to Spend at Minneriya National Park
A safari usually takes 3–4 hours, including the drive to and from the entrance. Most visitors do an afternoon safari after visiting Polonnaruwa or Sigiriya.
How to Get There
- From Habarana: the park entrance is on the Habarana–Polonnaruwa road, a short drive from Habarana, where most safari jeeps are based.
- From Polonnaruwa: about 25 km, around 30–40 minutes by road.
- From Sigiriya or Dambulla: about 1 hour by car; many guesthouses arrange jeep pickups.
- From Trincomalee: around 2 hours by road; tours with hotel pickup are available.
- From Colombo: about 180 km, roughly 4–5 hours by car.

There is no restaurant inside the park, so bring water and snacks (and take all rubbish back). Habarana, Polonnaruwa and Sigiriya have plenty of guesthouses and local restaurants serving rice and curry, and many safari drivers stop at roadside fruit and tea stalls.
