Merdeka Square, also known as Medan Merdeka or Lapangan Merdeka, which translates to Independence Square, is a expansive square located in the heart of Jakarta, Indonesia. History of Merdeka Square
The area now known as Merdeka Square has undergone several transformations throughout its history. During the Dutch East Indies colonial era, it was known as Koningsplein, meaning King’s Square. In 1949, after Indonesia gained its independence, President Sukarno renamed it Medan Merdeka, or Independence Square.
Over time, Merdeka Square became increasingly crowded with various structures, including the Gambir railway station, government offices, a stadium, and numerous parks and sports facilities. In 1954, Sukarno initiated the idea of erecting a National Monument at the center of the square to commemorate Indonesia’s independence struggle.

Merdeka Square – Entry Eligibility and Open Timings
- Merdeka Square is generally open to the public from 7:00 am to 9:00 pm daily. However, the opening hours for specific attractions within the square, such as the National Monument, may vary.
- As of August 2022, the observation desk is open from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm daily, except for Mondays.
- The National Monument is also open during night time from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm on Tuesdays to Fridays, and from 7:00 pm to 12:00 am on Saturdays and Sundays.
How Long to Spend at Merdeka Square
The amount of time to spend at Merdeka Square depends on individual interests and the activities planned. How to Get There
- Bus: TransJakarta, Jakarta’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, has several corridors that pass through or near Merdeka Square. Some of the corridors that stop near Merdeka Square are Corridor 1 (Blok M – Kota), Corridor 2 (Harmoni – Pulo Gadung), and Corridor 6 (Ragunan – Monas).
Train: The Gambir Station is located near the East Merdeka Park. From Gambir Station, it’s a short walk to Merdeka Square.
MRT: The Monas MRT subway station is currently under construction in the West Merdeka Park. Once completed, the MRT will provide a convenient way to access Merdeka Square.
Taxi/Ride-hailing: Taxis and ride-hailing services such as Gojek and Grab are readily available in Jakarta. Simply provide “Merdeka Square” or “Monas” as your destination.
Car: If driving, be aware that traffic in Jakarta can be congested, especially during peak hours. Parking is available in the IRTI parking ground in the South Merdeka Park.
Boat: Water transport is generally not a common mode of transportation to reach Merdeka Square, given its inland location.
