Inside the walls of Galle Fort, the National Maritime Archaeology Museum tells the story of Sri Lanka’s place on the Indian Ocean trade routes through objects recovered from shipwrecks off the south coast. History of Maritime Museum Galle
The museum first opened in 1992 in a VOC (Dutch East India Company) warehouse built in the 1670s next to the fort’s Old Gate. The building survived the 2004 tsunami, but the flood badly damaged the displays and only a fraction of the collection could be saved.
After a full renovation funded by the Netherlands, it reopened in March 2010 as Sri Lanka’s first National Maritime Archaeology Museum, focusing on finds from underwater excavations, including the Dutch ship Avondster, which sank in Galle harbour in 1659.
