    Lynch’s Castle

Lynch’s Castle is not just a building—it’s a living piece of Galway’s vibrant history. Nestled at the bustling crossroads of Shop Street and Abbeygate Street, this striking 16th-century fortified townhouse stands as one of Ireland’s best-preserved medieval urban castles. Today, it seamlessly blends the past with the present, serving as both a working bank and a must-see heritage attraction. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, architecture lover, or simply exploring Galway’s city centre, Lynch’s Castle offers a unique window into the city’s storied past.

    History of Lynch’s Castle

Lynch’s Castle was constructed by the influential Lynch family, one of the famed 14 Tribes of Galway, who dominated the city’s political and commercial life from the 13th to the 17th centuries. The Lynches, of Anglo-Norman descent, built this fortified residence as both a status symbol and a defensive stronghold against raids and unrest. While the bulk of the structure dates to the 16th century, some elements may trace back as far as the late 14th or early 15th century.

The castle is a four-storey limestone building adorned with elaborate Gothic-style carvings, gargoyles, and ornamental mouldings. The façade proudly displays the coats of arms of the Lynch family, King Henry VII, and the Fitzgeralds of Kildare—testament to the family’s alliances and status. Unique architectural details, such as decorative windows and harness-like half arches, reflect the building’s medieval roots and practical design. Notably, the holes in these arches once held wooden beams used to hoist large furniture into the upper floors.

Lynch’s Castle has witnessed pivotal moments in Galway’s history, including the 1596 siege by Red Hugh O’Donnell, the Cromwellian invasion in 1652, and the Williamite wars in 1691. The most famous legend associated with the Lynch family is that of Mayor James Lynch Fitzstephen, who allegedly hanged his own son for murder in the late 15th century—a story often (though inaccurately) cited as the origin of the word “lynching”.

By the early 19th century, Lynch’s Castle was used for commercial purposes. In 1933, Allied Irish Bank (AIB) acquired the building, embarking on a sensitive restoration that preserved its medieval character while adapting it for modern use. Today, it remains the only intact medieval secular building in Galway still in daily use.
