    Les Bassins des Lumières

If you’re searching for an unforgettable digital art experience in France, Les Bassins des Lumières in Bordeaux is a must-visit destination. Recognized as the world’s largest digital art center, this immersive attraction transforms a historic World War II submarine base into a mesmerizing fusion of light, sound, and water. Whether you’re an art enthusiast, a family looking for a unique outing, or a digital art lover, Les Bassins des Lumières promises a journey through masterpieces that captivate all ages. This guide covers everything you need to know for planning your visit, from its fascinating history to nearby eateries and transport options, ensuring your trip is seamless and memorable.

History of Les Bassins des Lumières

Les Bassins des Lumières is located within Bordeaux’s former submarine base, a massive structure built during World War II by the German navy. The base, with its thick concrete walls and vast wet docks, was originally designed to house submarines. After the war, the site stood as a somber reminder of the city’s wartime past.

In 2020, the City of Bordeaux entrusted Culturespaces with transforming four of the base’s wet docks (known as pens 1 to 4) into a spectacular digital art center. The result is Les Bassins des Lumières-the Pools of Light-which covers an astonishing 42,000 square meters and features four pools, each 110 meters long. This ambitious project took 19 months to complete, blending the site’s imposing industrial architecture with cutting-edge digital technology to create a new cultural landmark in Bordeaux.
