    Las Grietas

Nestled on Santa Cruz Island, close to Puerto Ayora town, Las Grietas is a stunning geological wonder and one of the most popular natural swimming holes in the Galápagos Islands. Formed by a long crevasse in the volcanic rock with towering cliffs on both sides, the deep, crystalline pools of brackish water provide a refreshing oasis in the equatorial heat. Welcomed by both locals and travelers, Las Grietas offers an exceptional blend of pristine nature, calm swimming waters, vibrant fishlife, and breathtaking scenery just a short distance from the heart of Puerto Ayora.

    History of Las Grietas

“Grieta” means “crack” or “crevasse” in Spanish, and this geological formation is exactly that—a split in volcanic rock created by seismic and volcanic activity millions of years ago. The fissure has since become flooded with a unique mix of saltwater from the ocean and freshwater filtering through the land, giving it its famous clear, calm, and pleasantly cool waters. The site has long been a favorite refuge for islanders and visitors seeking to escape the tropical sun in a spectacular natural setting. Since 2021, access is managed with a modest fee and mandatory local guide requirement to ensure conservation and safety.
