    Kata Beach

Kata Beach (Hat Kata, often called Kata Yai) is a 1.5 km curve of soft sand on Phuket’s west coast, between Karon to the north and Kata Noi to the south. It is relaxed, family-friendly and lively without the intensity of Patong, with the small island of Koh Pu sitting just offshore.

Plan your visit to Kata Beach

    • Entry: free
    • Open 24 hours; lifeguards by day
    • Time needed: half a day or more

    History of Kata Beach

Like much of Phuket’s west coast, the Kata area was home to fishing and tin-mining communities and coconut plantations before tourism arrived in the 1970s and 1980s. A Club Med resort opened right on the beach and helped put Kata on the map, and the area grew into the resort village you see today.

Kata is also Phuket’s main surfing beach. Since the 2000s it has hosted surf contests during the southwest monsoon, when swells roll in from the Andaman Sea.

    Attractions at Kata Beach

    • The beach: fine sand, shady trees at the back and generally calm, clear water from about December to April.
    • Koh Pu: the little island off the northern end, a classic backdrop for sunset photos.
    • Karon Viewpoint: the famous lookout over Kata Noi, Kata and Karon, about 10 minutes south by road.
    • Wat Kata (Wat Kittisangharam): the local Buddhist temple near the beach.
    • Dino Park Mini Golf: a dinosaur-themed mini-golf course on the road between Kata and Karon, popular with families.

Things to Do at Kata Beach

    • Swim and snorkel: best in the dry season; there is some coral around the rocks at the northern end.
    • Learn to surf: from roughly May to October, surf schools rent boards and give beginner lessons. Swim only between the flags, because rip currents are common in this season and red flags mean no swimming.
    • Relax: sunbeds, umbrellas and beach massages are available for hire.
    • Watch the sunset: Kata faces west, so sunsets over the Andaman Sea are a highlight.
    • Eat and shop: the streets behind the beach are full of restaurants, bars, massage shops and a small night market.

Kata Beach – Entry Eligibility and Open Timings

Kata Beach is a public beach with free entry and is open at all times. Lifeguards are posted on the main stretch during the day. Sunbed and umbrella rental is charged separately.

Always check the flags: during the southwest monsoon (about May to October) strong rip currents are common, and red flags mean the sea is closed for swimming.

    Activities

    • Surf lesson at Kata: beginner lessons on Klook (best in the May to October surf season)

How Long to Spend at Kata Beach

Plan on half a day for a beach visit, or base yourself here for a few days to explore the south of the island.

    How to Get There

    • From the airport: Kata is about 45 to 50 km from Phuket International Airport, roughly an hour by car depending on traffic.
    • By Phuket Smart Bus: the Smart Bus runs between the airport and Rawai, stopping at Patong, Karon and Kata. Check the current fare and timetable in the Phuket Smart Bus app.
    • By local bus (songthaew): blue songthaews run from Phuket Town to Karon and Kata during the day at a low fixed fare.
    • By taxi or ride-hailing: taxis and tuk-tuks are easy to find; apps like Grab and Bolt usually work out cheaper. Agree the fare before you get in a tuk-tuk.
    • By scooter or car: Kata is about 13 km south of Patong by road.

Arriving at Phuket Airport? Book a fixed-price airport transfer straight to your hotel in Kata.

    Eateries Nearby Kata Beach

    • The Boathouse: a long-established beachfront hotel restaurant at the southern end of Kata, known for seafood and wine.
    • Ska Bar: a quirky, laid-back bar built around the rocks at the southern end of the beach, ideal at sunset.
    • Kata Night Market: a small market behind the beach with cheap Thai food stalls in the afternoon and evening.
    • Local Thai restaurants: the roads behind the beach have many family-run places serving curries, noodles and seafood.

    Other Attractions Nearby Kata Beach

    • Kata Noi Beach: a smaller, quieter bay just south of Kata.
    • Karon Viewpoint: a few minutes’ drive south for the classic three-bay view.
    • Karon Beach: the long beach just to the north.
    • Phuket Big Buddha: on Nakkerd Hill, about 20 minutes away by car.
    • Promthep Cape: Phuket’s famous sunset point at the southern tip.

    Before your trip

    • Find hotels in Phuket: Kata has everything from guesthouses to beachfront resorts, and it is quieter than Patong.
    • Get a Thailand eSIM before you land, for maps and ride-hailing apps.

Kata Beach is one of Phuket’s best all-round beaches: soft sand, clear water in the dry season, good surf in the monsoon months and a relaxed village full of places to eat. It suits families and couples who want a lively base without the crowds of Patong.

Walk or drive south to quieter Kata Noi Beach, and finish the day with the view from Karon Viewpoint.
