    History of Kanazawa Castle Park

Kanazawa Castle has a rich and storied history dating back to 1580 when it was built by Sakuma Morimasa during the Sengoku period. Originally constructed as a fortress for the Ikkō-ikki sect, it later became the headquarters of the powerful Maeda clan, who ruled the Kaga Domain for over 280 years. The castle underwent significant reconstruction in 1592 under Maeda Toshiie after lessons learned during Japan’s invasions of Korea.

Throughout its history, Kanazawa Castle faced numerous challenges, including devastating fires that destroyed its central keep in 1759. Despite these setbacks, parts of the castle have been meticulously restored to their original glory using traditional techniques. The distinctive lead-tiled roofs served both as fireproofing and as a resource for casting bullets during sieges.
