ToggleJeongbang Waterfall
Jeongbang Waterfall in Seogwipo, on Jeju Island’s south coast, is a 23-metre waterfall that tumbles off black volcanic cliffs straight onto a rocky shore by the sea. It’s often described as the only waterfall in Asia that falls directly into the ocean, and it’s one of Jeju’s three best-known waterfalls along with Cheonjiyeon and Cheonjeyeon.
It’s a short walk from central Seogwipo, so it fits easily into a day on the south coast. Go early in the morning for fewer people and softer light.

History of Jeongbang Waterfall
Local legend says a holy dragon once lived beneath the falls. Another story tells of Seobul (Xu Fu), a servant of China’s Emperor Qin Shi Huang, who came looking for the herb of eternal youth on Hallasan. He didn’t find it, but is said to have carved “Seobulgwacha” (“Seobul passed by here”) on the cliff. The inscription has never been found, but the tale is told in a small exhibition hall near the entrance.
The falls also have a darker past: during the Jeju April 3rd Incident (1948–1949), civilians were executed near here. It’s a quiet reminder of a painful chapter in Jeju’s history.
