    Independence Square

Independence Square, formerly Marine Square, was renamed in 1962 to honor Trinidad and Tobago’s independence from Britain. Stretching along the southern waterfront of Port of Spain, the square is composed of pedestrianized promenades, shaded by trees, and flanked by notable landmarks, historic churches, and colorful market stalls. Locals and tourists alike flock here to socialize, shop for crafts or street foods, and enjoy the lively atmosphere infused with music and cultural vibrancy.

    History of Independence Square

Originally called Plaza de la Marina during Spanish colonial rule, the site was a low-lying area reclaimed from the sea and used as a main public square. After British capture in 1797, it was adapted and renamed Marine Square. The square housed military parades, markets, and social events throughout the 19th century.

With independence in 1962, the renaming to Independence Square symbolized a new beginning for the nation. Over the decades, the square has evolved as a central venue for political rallies, festivals, and cultural performances, cementing its standing as a living monument to Trinidad’s history and identity.
