    Hohensalzburg Fortress

Standing tall atop the Festungsberg hill at an altitude of 506 meters, the Hohensalzburg Fortress dominates Salzburg’s skyline. Its commanding presence is not just a visual treat but also a testament to its historical significance as a symbol of power and resilience. Whether you’re drawn by its panoramic views, rich history, or cultural events, the fortress promises an unforgettable experience.

    History of Hohensalzburg Fortress

The origins of Hohensalzburg Fortress date back to 1077 when Archbishop Gebhard von Helfenstein initiated its construction during the Investiture Controversy. Initially a modest bailey with wooden walls, it was expanded over centuries by successive prince-archbishops to become the formidable structure we see today. Key milestones in its development include:

    • 1462: Construction of ring walls and towers under Archbishop Burkhard II von Weißpriach.

    • 1495-1519: Major expansions by Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach, including the addition of the Reisszug funicular railway—arguably the world’s oldest operational railway.

    • 17th Century: Reinforcements during fears of Turkish invasions.

    • 19th Century: Transition from military use to a tourist attraction.

The fortress has never been captured by foreign troops, underscoring its strategic and architectural brilliance.
