ToggleHakgala Botanical Garden
Hakgala Botanical Garden is a cool highland garden at about 1,745 metres, around 10 km south-east of Nuwara Eliya on the road to Badulla. Covering about 28 hectares beneath the jagged Hakgala Rock, it is Sri Lanka’s second-largest botanic garden and is best known for its roses, ferns and temperate flowers.
It is run by the Department of National Botanic Gardens and pairs naturally with the Seetha Amman Temple just down the road.

History of Hakgala Botanical Garden
The garden was established in 1861 to experiment with the cultivation of cinchona, the tree whose bark yields quinine, used against malaria. It later trialled tea and other crops and was turned into a botanic garden in 1884, with plants from temperate countries that thrive in the cool climate.
Local tradition links the area with Ashok Vatika, the garden in the Ramayana where Ravana is said to have held Sita captive. The garden borders the Hakgala Strict Nature Reserve, a protected montane forest.

Hakgala Botanical Garden is a cool, flower-filled contrast to the tropical lowlands, with a famous rose garden, ferneries and views of Hakgala Rock. Visit in the morning, ideally between March and April when the flowers peak.
Pair it with the Seetha Amman Temple next door, or compare it with the tropical collection at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya.
