    Grouse Mountain

Just 15 minutes from downtown Vancouver, Grouse Mountain offers an unforgettable blend of thrilling outdoor adventure, spectacular panoramic views, rich cultural experiences, and wildlife encounters. Known as the “Peak of Vancouver,” this popular year-round destination is nestled in the North Shore Mountains and draws millions of visitors seeking skiing and snowboarding in winter, hiking and ziplining in summer, or simply the breathtaking vistas that stretch over the city, ocean, and distant mountains.

    History of Grouse Mountain

The mountain was named as early hikers in 1894 spotted a sooty or blue grouse native to the area and decided on the name. Initially reachable by steep trails or an eight-mile mountain highway completed in 1926 (closed in winter), Grouse Mountain’s accessibility greatly improved with the construction of the first chairlift in 1949 and subsequent cable cars in the 1960s and 1970s.

The original chalet was built on the summit in 1926 by Norwegian settlers, evolving over the decades into a major ski resort and tourism hub. Notable developments include the 1976 introduction of North America’s largest cable car at that time (Red Skyride) and, more recently, the opening of the sleek Blue Grouse Gondola in 2024, reducing peak ascent to just 5.5 minutes.

The land sits on the traditional territories of Coast Salish peoples, the Squamish, Musqueam, and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations, who are acknowledged and celebrated by the mountain’s ongoing cultural programs.
