    Fountain Square

Fountain Square (locally known as Fəvvarələr meydanı) has been a central gathering point in Baku since its inception in the late 19th century. The square’s name originates from its numerous fountains constructed during Soviet rule. Today, it serves as both a social hub for locals and tourists alike and a gateway to some of Baku’s most significant landmarks.

    History of Fountain Square

The transformation of Fountain Square began in 1866 when it was designed as part of Baku’s urban development plan. Initially named Parapet due to its location near fortifications surrounding Old City (Icheri Sheher), it quickly became an important social gathering spot reflecting European architectural influences prevalent across the Caucasus region at that time.

During the Soviet era, Fountain Square underwent significant changes with additions such as fountains symbolizing Soviet aspirations. It played a crucial role in public life hosting gatherings for celebrations and protests. After Azerbaijan gained independence in 1991, the square evolved into a vibrant cultural hub with frequent art exhibitions and festivals celebrating Azerbaijani heritage.
