    Folk Art Museum

The Cyprus Folk Art Museum is situated in a historic building that dates back to the 15th century, originally part of a Benedictine monastery and later used as the Old Archbishop’s Palace. Today, it stands as a testament to Cyprus’s cultural identity, housing over 5,000 artifacts that reflect the island’s diverse cultural influences. The museum’s collection includes textiles, pottery, woodcarvings, metalwork, and other traditional crafts, providing visitors with a comprehensive understanding of Cypriot folk art and its significance in the country’s history.

    History of Folk Art Museum

Founded in 1937 by the Society of Cypriot Studies, the Cyprus Folk Art Museum was initially housed in the premises of the Archbishop’s Palace. Following the construction of the new Archbishop’s Palace in 1961, the museum moved to its current location in the Old Archbishopric. The building has undergone several renovations, including a major restoration from 1962 to 1964, supported by Archbishop Makarios III. The museum has faced challenges, including temporary closures during the 1955-1959 troubles and the 1974 invasion, but it has continued to thrive, with new exhibitions opening in 1996 after significant renovations.
