    European Solidarity Centre

The European Solidarity Centre (ECS) in Gdańsk, Poland, stands as a powerful symbol of the nation’s turbulent journey to freedom and democracy. Located beside the historic Gdańsk Shipyard—the birthplace of the Solidarity movement—this award-winning museum and cultural hub offers a deeply immersive experience into the events that shaped not only Poland but the entire Eastern Bloc. Whether you are a history enthusiast, a family traveler, or someone seeking inspiration from stories of courage and social change, the ECS is an unmissable destination in northern Poland.

    History of European Solidarity Centre

The idea for the European Solidarity Centre originated in 1998, driven by local leaders and activists who recognized the need to preserve the memory of Poland’s struggle for freedom. The ECS project gained momentum with the support of figures like Lech Wałęsa, the iconic leader of Solidarity, and the Solidarity Trade Union itself. The foundation stone was laid in 2011, and the building—designed by FORT Architects to evoke the hulls of the shipyard’s vessels—opened its doors on August 31, 2014, marking the anniversary of the Gdańsk Agreement that catalyzed the movement.

The ECS is more than a museum; it is a living institution. It commemorates the peaceful revolution that led to the collapse of communism in Poland and inspired similar movements across Eastern Europe. The Centre also serves as a research, educational, and civic space, fostering ongoing dialogue about democracy, human rights, and social justice.
