History of Elbphilharmonie
The story of the Elbphilharmonie began in the early 2000s, when Hamburg launched an international competition to create a new cultural landmark that would bridge the city’s historic Speicherstadt with the modern HafenCity. Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron were selected for their visionary design, which ingeniously placed a shimmering glass structure atop the Kaispeicher A-a 1963 warehouse that once stored cocoa, tea, and tobacco.
Construction started with the ambitious goal of blending old and new. The project required gutting the warehouse, reinforcing its foundations with concrete piles, and installing a hydraulic lifting system to stabilize the building during work.
