    Cristo de la Concordia

Cristo de la Concordia, or the “Christ of Peace,” rises to the east of Cochabamba at 34.2 meters (112 feet) tall – making it even more prominent than Rio de Janeiro’s Christ the Redeemer when measured from base to tip. Perched 869 feet above the city, the statue is visible from nearly every neighborhood and represents a beacon of unity. Built of reinforced concrete and modeled on its Brazilian counterpart, Cristo de la Concordia is accessible via cable car, winding road, or by ascending a dramatic staircase of more than 1,200 steps, making the journey part of the experience.

History of Cristo de la Concordia

Conceived in the late 20th century, Cristo de la Concordia was designed by Bolivian architects César and Wálter Terrazas Pardo, with construction lasting from 1987 to 1994. The statue was inspired by an earlier visit from Pope John Paul II and modeled after Christ the Redeemer in Rio. Its finished height incorporates 1 meter for every year of Christ’s life, and Cochabamba locals are fond of mentioning the extra 44 centimeters as a friendly nod to its surpassing Rio’s height.

Cristo de la Concordia is more than a religious statue; it stands as a monument to peace and reconciliation, a theme reflected in its name—the “Concord.” Its presence is associated with hopes for peace and unity among Bolivians, commemorating the country’s spiritual history and modern aspirations.
