    Clérigos Church and Tower

The Clérigos Church and Tower (Igreja e Torre dos Clérigos) is one of Porto’s most iconic and recognizable monuments, dominating the city skyline with its soaring Baroque bell tower. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, architecture lover, photographer, or simply seeking the best panoramic views in Porto, this 18th-century complex is a must-see. The Clérigos Tower is not only a symbol of Porto but also a gathering point for travelers from around the world, offering a blend of religious heritage, artistic beauty, and unforgettable cityscapes.

    History of Clérigos Church

Commissioned by the Brotherhood of the Clérigos (Brotherhood of the Poor Clerics) in the early 18th century, the Clérigos Church was designed by Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni, who left a profound mark on Porto’s Baroque landscape. Construction of the church began in 1732, and its unique elliptical nave was among the first of its kind in Portugal, reflecting the innovative spirit of the Baroque movement.

The monumental Clérigos Tower, completed in 1763, was inspired by Tuscan campaniles and Roman Baroque influences. At 75.6 meters (249 feet), it became Portugal’s tallest bell tower and a defining feature of Porto’s cityscape. Nasoni himself became so attached to the project and the city that he joined the Brotherhood and was eventually buried in the church crypt, though the exact location remains a mystery.

The church and tower were built atop the “hill of the hanged men,” a place historically used for executions, adding a layer of intrigue to the site’s story.
