    Church of Saint Lazarus

The Church of Saint Lazarus is situated in the historic center of Larnaca, near the waterfront, making it easily accessible to visitors exploring the city. The church is renowned for its stunning Byzantine architecture and its association with Lazarus, who, according to Orthodox tradition, was resurrected by Jesus and later became the first Bishop of Kition (modern-day Larnaca). History of Church of Saint Lazarus

The Church of Saint Lazarus has a rich history dating back to the late 9th century. According to tradition, Lazarus fled Judea after his resurrection and found refuge in Cyprus, where he was appointed as the first Bishop of Kition by Paul the Apostle and Barnabas. He lived for thirty more years before his death and was buried in Larnaca. The church was built over his tomb in the late 9th century by Byzantine Emperor Leo VI, following the discovery of Lazarus’ remains in 890 AD.

Over the centuries, the church has undergone various restorations and modifications, reflecting the diverse cultural influences that have shaped Cyprus. In 898 AD, Emperor Leo VI had Lazarus’ remains transferred to Constantinople, although some relics remained in Larnaca. The church’s architecture and historical significance make it a unique cultural landmark in Cyprus.
