    Chicamocha Canyon

Chicamocha Canyon (Cañón del Chicamocha) is one of Colombia’s foremost natural wonders, offering visitors awe-inspiring vistas, thrilling adventure sports, and a compelling journey into local history and geology. Stretching for over 230 kilometers and sinking to depths of more than 2,000 meters, Chicamocha Canyon is often compared to the Grand Canyon, yet is deeper in parts and distinct in its dramatic, arid terrain that cuts through the heart of Santander Department. Home to Chicamocha National Park (Panachi), this marvel is a magnet for travelers seeking a blend of outdoor exploration, cultural heritage, and breathtaking landscapes.

    History of Chicamocha Canyon

Formed through tectonic activity during the Andean orogeny in the Early Oligocene, Chicamocha Canyon reveals evidence of ancient geological processes and has been inhabited since pre-Hispanic times by indigenous cultures such as the Guane, Laches, and Yariguíes. Remnants of their lives—including artifacts, language, and traditions—can be explored at the Guane Archaeological and Paleontological Museum and within cultural displays at various park sites.

The National Park itself was inaugurated in 2006 to protect and share the canyon’s immense beauty. It’s now a symbol of Santander pride, drawing ecotourists and adventure lovers from all corners of Colombia and beyond.
