Cheonjiyeon Waterfall is a 22-metre waterfall in a lush, subtropical gorge in Seogwipo, on Jeju Island’s south coast. Its name means roughly “the pond where sky and earth meet”. An easy, flat path from the entrance leads through the forest to a deep green pool at the foot of the falls.
Unlike most sights on Jeju, it stays open into the evening, when the path and the falls are softly lit. Don’t confuse it with Cheonjeyeon Waterfall in Jungmun, which has three tiers and the Seven Nymphs (Seonimgyo) Bridge.

History of Cheonjiyeon Waterfall
The falls were formed where a stream cuts through layers of volcanic rock on its way to the sea at Seogwipo Port. The warm, humid gorge around them shelters a rare warm-temperate forest, and the area is protected as a natural monument.
The pool is also a protected habitat of the giant mottled eel, a rare freshwater eel, which is one reason swimming isn’t allowed. Today the falls are one of Seogwipo’s most visited sights, alongside nearby Jeongbang Waterfall.

- The waterfall: a single 22 m drop over dark volcanic cliffs into a deep pool, about 12 m wide.
- The forest path: a paved, mostly flat walk of a few hundred metres along the stream, under subtropical trees and ferns.

- Rules: swimming and feeding the fish aren’t allowed.

Allow 30 minutes to an hour for the walk to the falls and back. Add an hour if you go on to Saeseom Island and the harbour.

- From Jeju Airport: take the airport limousine bus or an express bus to Seogwipo, then a short taxi ride or walk to the falls (allow 1 hour 15 minutes to 1.5 hours).
- By car: about 1 hour from Jeju City; there’s a parking lot by the entrance near Seogwipo Port.
- On foot: about 15 minutes’ walk from central Seogwipo (Olle Market area).
