    Castelo de São Jorge

Perched majestically atop Lisbon’s highest hill, Castelo de São Jorge (St. George’s Castle) is a must-visit landmark that dominates the city’s skyline and offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Portuguese capital and the River Tagus. This iconic fortress, nestled in the historic Alfama district, is not just a castle—it’s a living tapestry of Portugal’s rich history, architectural grandeur, and vibrant culture. Whether you’re a history buff, a photography enthusiast, or a family seeking adventure, São Jorge Castle promises an unforgettable experience in the heart of Lisbon.

History of Castelo de São Jorge

The story of Castelo de São Jorge stretches back over two millennia. The earliest known fortifications on this site date to the 2nd century BC, with archaeological remains suggesting human presence as far back as the 6th century BC. Over the centuries, the hilltop has seen the footprints of Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, and Moors, each leaving their mark on the landscape.

The castle as we see it today was originally constructed by the Moors in the 10th and 11th centuries, when Lisbon was a bustling Moorish port. In 1147, Portugal’s first king, Dom Afonso Henriques, captured the castle during the Christian reconquest, marking a pivotal moment in Portuguese history. The castle then became a royal residence and played host to significant events, including the reception of Vasco da Gama by King Manuel I after his historic sea voyage to India and the performance of Portugal’s first theatre play.

Throughout the centuries, São Jorge Castle served various roles: royal palace, military barracks, home to the Torre do Tombo National Archive, and even a charitable institution for the education of poor children. The devastating earthquakes of 1531 and 1755 led to significant damage, but extensive 20th-century restorations have returned much of the castle’s original grandeur. Declared a National Monument in 1910, it stands today as one of Lisbon’s most cherished historical sites.
