    Büyük Han

The Büyük Han, meaning “Great Inn” in Turkish, is situated within the traditional market center of Nicosia, nestled within the city walls. This architectural marvel is considered one of the finest examples of Ottoman caravanserai architecture in Cyprus, reflecting the island’s diverse cultural influences. The complex consists of four two-story buildings surrounding a spacious courtyard, creating a tranquil oasis amidst the bustling city life.

    History of Büyük Han

Büyük Han was constructed in 1572 under the auspices of Muzaffer Pasha, the first Ottoman governor of Cyprus, following the Ottoman conquest of the island from the Venetians. Initially known as “Alanyalilar’s Han,” it was later referred to as Büyük Han due to its larger size compared to the nearby Kumarcilar Han built in the 17th century. Over the centuries, the building has served various purposes, including as a prison during the British colonial period and later as a shelter for the poor. In the 1990s, it underwent significant restoration and transformed into a thriving cultural center.
