Balik Pulau, meaning “the back of the island” in Malay, is the rural heart of Penang’s west coast, about 13 km southwest of George Town. Instead of shophouses and malls you will find durian orchards, nutmeg trees, paddy fields, small fishing villages and some of the island’s best-loved hawker food.
It makes a relaxed half-day or full-day escape from the city, by car, bus or on a guided cycling tour.

History of Balik Pulau
The British East India Company established an agricultural settlement here in 1794, planting cloves and nutmeg to help cover the costs of running Penang and to compete with the Dutch spice trade.
Through the 1800s the area drew Malay settlers and Chinese labourers, who lived in communal longhouses. The town centre is still known locally as “Kongsi”, meaning “to share”, after those shared houses. Today Balik Pulau remains famous for durians, nutmeg and cloves, and draws crowds during the durian season, roughly May to August.

- Durian and fruit orchards: many hillside farms sell durians and other tropical fruit in season, often with simple seating to eat on the spot.
- Tropical Fruit Farm: a hillside farm on the road between Teluk Bahang and Balik Pulau offering tours with fruit tasting. Check opening times before you go.
- Paddy fields: green rice fields around the villages, at their most photogenic before harvest.
- Fishing villages: coastal kampungs such as Pulau Betong, with wooden jetties and boats bringing in the catch.
- Balik Pulau town: a small market town with old shophouses, a busy morning market and nutmeg products for sale.

- Join a countryside cycling tour: guided half-day rides take in orchards, plantations, mangroves and fishing villages on mostly flat roads, with hotel pickup.
- Eat durian in season: Balik Pulau is the island’s durian capital, and many farms sell fruit straight from the orchard.
- Try Balik Pulau laksa: the town’s asam laksa is one of Penang’s most famous versions.
- Drive the hill road: the winding route over the hills from Teluk Bahang or Air Itam passes farms and roadside fruit stalls.
- Buy nutmeg products: look for nutmeg juice, nutmeg balm and preserved nutmeg in local shops.

- Entry: Balik Pulau is a town and countryside area, so there is no entry fee. Farms and orchards set their own prices and hours.
- Best time: mornings are cooler and markets are busiest. Durian season usually runs from around May to August.
- Tip: many small farms and stalls only take cash.

How Long to Spend at Balik Pulau
Plan half a day for a drive, a meal and an orchard stop, or a full day if you add a cycling tour, a fishing village and Penang National Park on the north coast.
How to Get There
- By car or Grab: about 40 minutes to an hour from George Town, either via the airport and the southern coast or over the hills via Air Itam or Teluk Bahang.
- By bus: several Rapid Penang routes serve Balik Pulau, including 401 and 401E (via the airport) and 501 and 502. Check current routes on the Rapid Penang website.
- From Penang International Airport: around 25 to 35 minutes by car.
