Avanos is a relaxed riverside town in northern Cappadocia, about 10 km from Göreme, known above all for its pottery. It sits on the banks of the Kızılırmak (“Red River”), the longest river flowing entirely within Turkey, whose red clay has supplied local potters for thousands of years.

History of Avanos
Known in antiquity as Venasa, Avanos was an important town of ancient Cappadocia, with a well-known temple of Zeus in the Roman period. Pottery making here is often traced back to Hittite times, and the riverside clay is still used by workshops in the old town today.
Like the rest of the region, Avanos had a mixed Muslim and Greek Orthodox population until the 1923 population exchange. Its old quarter of stone houses climbs the hill above the river, while the modern centre spreads along the riverbank.

- Kızılırmak riverside: A promenade with cafés and a pedestrian suspension bridge across the river.

- Hair Museum (Chez Galip): An unusual cave room covered in locks of hair left by visitors, inside a pottery shop.
- Saruhan Caravanserai: A 13th-century Seljuk caravanserai about 5 km east of town, which hosts whirling dervish ceremonies on some evenings (check current schedules).

How to Get There
- From Göreme: About 10–12 km (15–20 minutes) by car or taxi; regular minibuses connect Avanos with Göreme and Nevşehir.
- From the airports: Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport (NAV) is about 30–40 minutes away and Kayseri Airport (ASR) about 1 hour; shuttles and private transfers serve both.
- By long-distance bus: Most buses from Istanbul, Ankara and other cities run to Nevşehir, with connecting services to Avanos; check your ticket.
