The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, is one of Japan’s most popular modern art museums, set in the city centre a few minutes’ walk from Kenroku-en. Opened in 2004, it was designed as a museum “open to the city like a park”: a low, round glass building with entrances on all sides and free public areas alongside the paid exhibitions.
Note: the museum is scheduled to close for renovation from 6 May 2027 to around March 2028.

History of 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art
The museum was designed by Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa of SANAA. The circular building, 112.5 metres across, has no front or back, so visitors can approach from any direction. SANAA went on to win the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2010.
Its collection focuses on art from 1980 onwards, and several works were made specifically for the building, the most famous being Leandro Erlich’s Swimming Pool.

- The Swimming Pool (Leandro Erlich): seen from above it looks like a real pool; from below you appear to stand underwater. Looking in from above is generally free, but going underneath requires an exhibition ticket and timed entry is often in place.

- Outdoor works: including colourful pieces on the lawns, such as Olafur Eliasson’s Colour activity house.

- By bus: buses from the east exit of Kanazawa Station take about 10–20 minutes to the Hirosaka / 21st Century Museum stop.
- On foot: about 5–10 minutes from Kenroku-en, Kanazawa Castle Park or Kōrinbō, or about 25–30 minutes from Kanazawa Station.
- By taxi: about 10 minutes from the station.
